| Exhibition of paintings made during the second half of the twentieth century. |
It is in the neighborhood of Raval in the city of Barcelona (Spain), near the Center of Contemporary Culture.
The idea of establishing a museum in the city of these features is due to the writer and art critic-Pellicer Cirici who in 1959 began assembling a collection of works. Cirici was assisted by other amateur artists who contributed to the expansion of the collection. They made several exhibitions of works by artists of the time. The exhibition Art and Peace, held in 1963 and had a clear content-Franco, was the end of the idea Cirici. The collection so far collected is deposited in the Museum Victor Balaguer.
The idea was not recovered until 1985. Created a consortium that formed part of the City of Barcelona and the Generalitat of Catalonia and it was decided to locate the new museum in the old House of Charity. The idea was again held back until 1986, the then mayor of Barcelona, Pasqual Maragall, commissioned the construction of a new building that was headquarters for the future museum. In 1987 she formed the Contemporary Art Museum Foundation, a private one, which joined the consortium formed by the two governments. The MACBA was opened on 28 November 1995.
The construction of what would become the headquarters of the museum commissioned the American architect Richard Meier. The building designed by Meier aims to unite contemporary art exhibited inside with the historical forms of the surrounding buildings. The MACBA entrance hall gives access to a cylindrical shape from which you access through ramps at various galleries in which exposures are made. The use of white, complemented by the use of glass skylights and reflective materials, the building does have a special brightness.
It is also known as a famous spot to skateboard.
