| Museum dedicated to the life and work of Spanish painter Antoni Tàpies. |
The foundation was founded by the artist himself in 1984. The idea was to create a center for the study and promotion of contemporary art. It has one of the most complete collections of Tàpies's work donated by the painter himself and Teresa Tàpies. Contains more than 300 works from all periods of art of the painter. Opened in 1990.
Besides the permanent exhibitions on the artist in Barcelona, the museum makes many temporary exhibitions covering all genres of art. It also stresses the library specializing in modern art, and is considered one of the most comprehensive of its kind worldwide. It also has a section devoted to the study of Asian art
The headquarters is located in the Eixample district, in a modernist building designed by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner. Built between 1881 and 1885, the building's facade combines the use of brick with iron. It was the first of its kind to be built in the area and served as headquarters of the Editorial Montaner i Simon.
It was restored by the architect Lluís Domènech Roser Girbau Amadó and also upgraded to be the headquarters of the Foundation. Tàpies made a sculpture, Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair), now crowns the facade of the building and has become a symbol of the foundation itself.
