The Generalitat is located on the Plaza de San Jaime.

The building was purchased by the Government of Catalonia in 1400. Only in the year 1596 saw the first major reform, the architect Pere Blai was asked to modify the front and leave with a genuine Renaissance. Because the building was not built for that task, during the XV and XVII century it was carrying out numerous reforms in order to adapt to the demands that a political edifice.

This led to numerous styles are present today in the building as the Gothic style in the courtyard. With regard to the interior of the building one of the most interesting note is that St. George's Hall built in the late seventeenth century by Pere Blai also that design in order to replace the chapel of St. George, which did not happen. In 1908 he was asked the famous Uruguayan painter Joaquin Torres Garcia to undertake a mural in the lounge and in years after the dictatorship was replaced by paintings hinting militarism. Other important and prominent areas of the interior are the central courtyard, the room Torres - Garcia and the Patio de los Naranjos in a Renaissance style mixed with actual pieces of the Gothic period.
